Rebekah Mapson.
Rebekah moved to Dunedin from Auckland in 2006 to attend university and loved it so much she never left. The pace of life, beautiful surroundings and lack of Auckland traffic mean she now cannot imagine living anywhere else.
Rebekah began practising law in 2017 after completing a Master’s degree in Bioethics and Health Law. She has broad experience in property and private client law, acting for commercial, government and private clients throughout New Zealand.
If it relates to property, chances are Rebekah can help. Her experience includes residential, commercial and rural property transactions, subdivisions, leases and licences, easements and covenants, and complex title matters. She has particular expertise advising landowners whose properties are affected by public infrastructure and development projects, including where the Crown or a local authority seeks to acquire land or property interests under the Public Works Act. She assists clients throughout the acquisition process, including advising on compensation entitlements, negotiating with acquiring authorities, and helping clients achieve fair and practical outcomes.
Rebekah also advises clients on wills, enduring powers of attorney, trusts and succession planning, together with governance and administration matters for charities, charitable trusts and incorporated societies.
Before becoming a lawyer, Rebekah worked in libraries, including for the Otago Branch of the New Zealand Law Society. It was there that her interest in law – and her love of research and problem-solving – really developed. She still enjoys untangling complex issues and making them easier for clients to understand.
Outside work, Rebekah is a trustee of the Dunedin Fringe Arts Trust and has performed with the Southern Consort of Voices and Opera Otago. She is an avid reader, a recent Reformer Pilates convert and loves to travel. At home, she is happiest with a cup of tea, a good book and her mini poodle, Zella.
