Paul joined Downie Stewart as a Partner in 2015. He first practiced law in Wellington as part of the mergers and acquisitions team of Kensington Swann. He joined Anderson Lloyd in Dunedin in 2001 where he gained wide commercial experience. He became a partner there in 2007.
Paul advises on commercial, business and corporate law matters.
His experience includes mergers and acquisitions, divestments, joint ventures, takeovers, capital raising, corporate structuring and negotiating and preparing commercial agreements.
He has worked on several South Island-based takeovers as well as advising on obtaining shareholder approval under the Code for a number of companies. Paul has also been involved in the listing of several companies on the NZX and subsequent issues of shares.
He was part of the team advising the Statutory Managers of Aorangi Securities Limited and related entities.
Other activities include financing (acting both for banks and borrowers), securities work, property syndication, commercial property sales and commercial leasing for a large number of commercial landlords.
Paul says his clients need good technical, practical advice and there is always a need to consider their wider business needs and guide them in the right direction to get to where they want to be.
He enjoys building really strong relationships with his clients and believes it's important to be approachable and easy to contact.
Paul has previously been a member of the New Zealand Law Society Commercial & Business Law Committee and made submissions on behalf of a number of clients in relation to various pieces of legislation including the Financial Advisors Act 2008
A keen golfer, Paul is on the Management Committee at the Otago Golf Club.
