Downie Stewart Lawyers partner Gerard DeCourcy accepts the Supreme Employer of Choice award at the New Zealand Law Awards.
Downie Stewart Lawyers Dunedin has been judged to have the best work environment out of all the law firms and legal organisations in New Zealand.
At the annual New Zealand Law Awards, held at Auckland's War Memorial Museum in November 2012, Downie Stewart Lawyers was named Employer of Choice for law firms with up to 50 staff, and also won the Supreme Award for Employer of Choice.
Downie Stewart was selected from nine finalists from around the country – some of them large firms with more than 100 staff. The entries were judged by a panel of experts, based on feedback confidentially submitted by staff at each of the workplaces.
Downie Stewart was described by one voter as being "the best employer I have ever come across", and another voter said, "There is an incredible bond of two-way loyalty between the firm and staff. The firm has a tradition of performing quality work with compassion and integrity and respecting everyone in the firm. The staff not only buy into this philosophy but in fact police it themselves."
Downie Stewart partner Gerard DeCourcy accepted the award at the ceremony.
He said it was the first time the firm had entered any awards event and the partners were very pleased to have won a top prize.
"Its very affirming for us, " he said. "We have a really tight knit team of experienced professionals. Most of our people have been with us for more than 10 years (some more than 20 years) and are extemely loyal to the firm and our clients. We look after each other and work together to make sure our clients are looked after. Our staff are the stewards of our workplace culture and deserve the credit for what we have created together. "
